What is Piles Surgery?

Piles surgery is the medical procedure of removing or shrinking piles that occur inside our anus or on its lining. The doctor will ask you to stop taking any medication that you were taking seven days before the surgery. On the day of the surgery, the doctor will administer general anesthesia. A cut will be made around the tissue of the piles using a scalpel or cauterized knife. Once the swollen vein is tied off, the hemorrhoid is removed carefully. The surgical site is stitched close and covered with gauze.

After the surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room where your vital signs will be monitored. Once the effects of anesthesia wear off, you will be sent home. Your doctor will give you a set of painkillers along with a set of instructions to follow at home. Eat a bland diet and apply an ice pack whenever it pains.

  • Coagulation - In this procedure, the doctor creates a scar on the pile using an electric current or infrared light. This restricts the blood flow to the pile, causing it to shrink and fall off.
  • Sclerotherapy - In this procedure, a chemical is inserted into the pile to numb the nerve endings. This results in the reduction of pain and the pile to fall off.
  • Hemorrhoidectomy - In this procedure, anesthesia is administered to the patient. The pile is removed using a scalpel or cauterized knife.
