When to See a Doctor

You may consult an ENT doctor if you are facing any of the following problems:

  • Tonsillitis
Tonsilitis is the inflammation of the throat due to bacterial infection. It is more common in children.
It can have many symptoms like sore throat, swelling in the tonsils, fever, and issues in swallowing. If you experience a recurring sore throat or other symptoms, an ENT doctor may suggest surgery.
  • Hearing Loss
Hearing loss can occur in one or both ears. It can be mild, moderate, or severe. The symptoms may include ringing in the ears, not understanding daily conversation clearly, or asking others to repeat things.
It can be of three types, and there are a few treatment options for it as well. The doctor may suggest a hearing aid, cochlear implants, or earwax removal.
  • Ear Infection
These infections happen when the eustachian tubes swell up and cause fluid to fill in the middle ear. People from ear infections may experience pain in the ear, pus-like fluid, hearing loss, or pressure in the ear.
Mild infections can go away with the help of drops and medicines. But if the problem is a recurring one, the doctor may suggest surgery to place tubes in the ear to drain out fluids.
  • Allergies
ENT allergies are common and have several symptoms. It depends on the reaction of your body to differing environmental conditions. Some substances which may not harm most people can trigger allergic reactions in some.
Some symptoms of allergies are runny nose, constant sneezing, frequent ear infections, and fatigue. The doctor may suggest the use of nasal sprays, oral antihistamines, and decongestants.
  • Sinus Infection
Sinus infection is the swelling in the tissues lining the sinuses. Common cold, nasal polyps, a deviated septum can be some causes of this condition. The infection can be acute, chronic, or recurrent.
Symptoms include a stuffy nose, runny nose, pain under the eyes, fever, fatigue, and bad breath. It usually goes away with the help of medications, warm compresses, and drops.
  • Head and Neck Cancer
Cancers that affect the pharynx, larynx, salivary glands, nasal and oral cavities fall under this category. The causes of this kind of cancer can be due to the intake of certain food items and poor oral hygiene.
The symptoms can be pain while swallowing, pain in the face, red patches on the gum, and trouble hearing. The doctor may suggest chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or radiation therapy.
  • Gastric Reflux
It is perhaps the most common disorder that ENT doctors treat. In this, some of the acid content of the stomach comes up through the esophagus. People who are obese, smoke, and exercise irregularly can be at risk of getting it.
Caffeine, alcohol, a diet low in fiber, a high salt intake, and consuming acidic juices can also lead to acid reflux. The doctor may suggest H2 blockers, PPIs, antacids, and alginate drugs like Gaviscon.
Some lifestyle changes can also prove beneficial, like regular exercise, wearing loose clothes, avoiding smoking, losing weight if you are obese, and improving posture.
