Urological endoscopy

When you are suffering from urological problems, it can be painful and inconvenient while it can interfere with your day-to-day life. So, when you visit your doctor with your problems, they may suggest a urological endoscopy to diagnose the condition further.

What are the Types of Endoscopies?

There are two types of endoscopies, they are;

  • Cystoscopy: During this procedure, your doctor uses a cystoscope, a special instrument with a long tube, and a camera attached. This helps look at the bladder and the urethra closely.
  • Ureteroscopy: Here, the instrument is an even longer tube and comes with a camera attached to help take a look at the kidneys and the ureters (tubes that connect the kidney to the bladder).

These procedures aren’t very long and take approximately an hour.

Why Do you Need Urological Endoscopy?

Some of the most common reasons why you may need a urological endoscopy is because;

  • You may feel the need to urinate several times a day
  • If you are someone who suffers from recurring urinary tract disorders
  • If you experience pain while you are urinating
  • If you are not able to empty your bladder completely
  • Urine leakage
  • It also helps detect cancer

Your doctor will try to look for cancers or tumors, polyps, stones, a narrowed urethra, and inflammation during the procedure. With the endoscopy, your doctor might also be able to;

  • Remove tumors, polyps, and any other abnormal tissues
  • If you have a stone present in the urinary tract, it can be removed during this procedure
  • To take a tissue sample of your urinary tract
  • To treat a part of the urinary tract with the necessary medication
  • To insert a stent

When to See a Doctor?

After this procedure, it is quite common to feel a slight discomfort while you pee and there are chances of spotting blood. However, if the pain or the bleeding becomes excessive or if you are noticing any other side effects, you must get in touch with your doctor immediately.

How to Prepare for an Endoscopy?

Endoscopy doesn’t need an overnight hospital stay and the entire procedure usually takes about an hour. To prepare for this procedure, your doctor will present you with a list of instructions, such as medications to avoid, what to eat or drink before the procedure, which must be followed. For a few types of endoscopies, it is necessary to fast for 12 hours before the procedure. Therefore, talk to your doctor and tell them about all the medications you consume.

During the procedure, you will mostly be conscious and receive local anesthesia for the procedure.

What are the Risk Factors?

Urological endoscopy is a safe procedure usually, but some of the risk factors that can occur include;

  • Problems with anesthesia
  • Bloating after the procedure
  • You may experience mild cramping
  • You may experience a sore throat after the procedure
  • There are chances of an infection
  • Pain in the area of endoscopy
  • Internal bleeding

If you notice blood in stools, vomiting, and shortness of breath, talk to your doctor immediately.

What is the Recovery Process?

The patient will be observed for a while after the procedure and the usual time is about an hour. If you feel better after that and don’t experience any discomfort, you will be discharged. Once you reach home, you must rest for a day to ensure there are no risks.

Urological endoscopy is a safe procedure when done right. However, don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have.
