Thyroid Surgery in Sadashiv Peth, Pune
Thyroid surgery, also known as Thyroidectomy, is a surgical procedure performed to remove the thyroid gland, either wholly or a part of it. The thyroid gland is found at the bottom area of your neck. It performs the function of producing hormones that are responsible for controlling your digestion and other related activities. Thyroid surgery may also be performed to treat other diseases concerned with the thyroid gland.
Why is Thyroid Surgery done?
Thyroid surgery may be recommended by your doctor in certain cases such as:
- Thyroid cancer – this is the most known reason for thyroid surgery. If you have thyroid cancer, it is recommended to remove the major part of your thyroid.
- Noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid or Goiter – In this case, there can be an alternative between removing the entire thyroid gland or only a part of it. The choice is made depending on the size of the goiter and its related symptoms.
- Overactive thyroid or hyperthyroidism - Hyperthyroidism refers to a condition wherein your thyroid gland produces too much thyroxine, a type of hormone.
- Graves’ disease - Hyperthyroidism is mainly caused due to an immunological abnormality called Graves’ disease, which leads the body to misread the thyroid gland as an unknown body and send antibodies to attack it. These antibodies, in turn, inflame the thyroid, leading to hormone overproduction.
- Indeterminate or suspicious thyroid nodules – In certain cases, it cannot be determined if the thyroid nodules present are cancerous in nature with the help of a needle biopsy. If that is the case with you, the doctors may recommend that you undergo thyroid surgery if the nodules showcase an increased risk of being cancerous.
What are the Types of Thyroid Surgeries that can be performed?
Three types of thyroid surgeries are available and can be performed depending on the requirement:
- Total Thyroidectomy – this type of surgery is chosen in case the situation requires the removal of the entire thyroid gland. Thyroid cancer is one such medical condition that asks for total thyroidectomy.
- Subtotal Thyroidectomy – In this type of surgery, the entire thyroid gland is removed but a section of thyroid tissue is saved for partial thyroid function. Subtotal thyroidectomy is generally performed in case of hypothyroidism.
- Lobectomy – when only half of the thyroid gland has been affected, lobectomy is preferred in such as case. The lobe left behind continues to perform its functions.

How is Thyroid Surgery performed?
Avoid eating or drinking anything after midnight before the day of your surgery. On the day of the surgery, when you arrive at the hospital, a general check-up before the surgery takes place. You may be put under general or local anesthesia. An incision is made over the thyroid gland to remove all or part of the thyroid gland as required. The procedure may take about 2 hours or more because it requires careful handling as the gland is small and surrounded by multiple nerves. After the surgery, your vital signs will be checked and pain medication as needed will be prescribed. You’ll be kept under observation for 24 to 48 hours after your condition is a little stabilized.
Avoid eating or drinking anything for a certain duration before the surgery, as recommended by your doctor. Make sure there is someone to take you home after the surgery and to look after for a few days.
