Sinus Infections Treatment in Sadashiv Peth, Pune
The sinuses are nothing but hollow cavities in the skull. The largest sinus cavity is located in the cheekbones and is known as the maxillary sinuses. The others include frontal sinuses- located in the lower center of the forehead, ethmoid sinuses- located between the eyes, and sphenoid sinuses- located behind the nose. Sinuses are usually empty and covered in a thin line of soft, pink tissue and a layer of mucus. There is a small drainage pathway from the sinuses to the nose to help clear the sinuses.
Types of Sinuses
Acute Sinusitis: Either due to viral, bacterial, or fungal infection, the sinuses get infected causing mucus and nasal congestion. This is when you might experience discomfort in the forehead or cheeks and even suffer a headache.
Chronic Sinusitis: It is more than just an infection where the sinuses get continuously inflamed.
Deviated Septum: The nose is divided by a septum. However, if it is too far away on one portion, the airflow to the nostrils gets obstructed.
Hay Fever: Allergies, such as pollen or dust allergies can make the defenses in the sinuses overactive, which leads to mucus, stuffy nose, itching, and sneezing.
Symptoms
Pain in sinuses: One of the most common sinus symptoms includes pain in the areas where your sinuses are located. The reason behind this is the inflammation or swelling of the sinuses.
Nasal discharge: When you have a sinus infection, you feel the need to blow your nose often where the fluid that comes out is usually greenish or cloudy or even yellowish. This fluid has been drained from the infected sinuses.
Nasal congestion: If your sinuses become inflamed, it is possible that you find it difficult to breathe.
Headache: If you experience a headache in places where your sinuses are present, it could be a symptom of sinus infection.

Diagnosis
When you visit your healthcare provider, they will ask you several questions to understand your medical history better. They will also check your ear, nose, and throat to look for the symptoms, such as swelling or blockage. In some cases, an endoscope (a small medical instrument) may be used to look inside the nose or a CT scan may be ordered. It depends on the type of symptoms you are suffering from.
Treatment
There are a few ways to treat the condition depending upon your symptoms. The common methods include;
- Taking over the counter cold and allergy medicines to cure the condition
- Drinking plenty of fluids helps provide relief from sinus sooner
- Monitoring decongestants
- Nasal saline irrigation is a method where you spray the solution into the nose
- Topical or oral decongestants
- Steroid sprays
If the patient is suffering from a chronic condition and none of the methods provide relief, surgery might be conducted to correct any structural problems that are causing sinus. Surgery is also the chosen method if the patient is suffering from polys or fungal infection.
Home Remedies
- Essential oils are known to cure sinus infections, such as peppermint oil
- Drinking pepper-infused tea or ginger tea can provide relief especially if the sinus thats occurred is because of cold
- Nasal saline irrigation can be prepared at home by mixing 1 cup of warm water with ½ cup of salt and ½ cup of baking soda. It can be monitored inside the nose using a nasal sprayer.
- Applying a warm compress on the sinuses can help provide relief from sinus headaches.
- It is important to consume water and other fluids, such as fruit juices.
Try to avoid things that can irritate the nose. For instance, if you are someone who suffers from a dust allergy, it is important to wear a mask whenever you step out of your home.
Acute sinus can go away in a week or two if proper care is taken.
If even after taking over-the-counter medicines if you don’t see the symptoms declining, you need to visit a doctor to undergo proper treatment.
