Preparing for Endoscopic Sinus

Before the surgery

Before the doctor can determine the need for endoscopic surgery, the doctor will take your medical history and conduct a physical exam to understand your symptoms better. Your doctor will recommend a CT scan and blood tests to understand the seriousness of the problem.

Once these tests are done, the doctor will ask you to stop taking any medication and alcohol ten days before the surgery. The patient should not eat or drink anything 8 hours before the endoscopic surgery. The patient should also have no fever or cold before the surgery. If the patient develops a fever, the doctor should be notified before the surgery.

During the procedure

The patient is taken to the operation theatre where general anaesthesia will be administered. A tube with a camera is inserted through the nostrils to get a better picture of your sinus. If your sinus is blocked, an instrument is used to drain the liquid from the nostrils by opening the air cells.

After the procedure

After the surgery, the patient is taken to the observation room where the nurse will observe their vital signs. Once the patient has recovered from anaesthesia, the person will be allowed to go home on the same day.

After the patient goes home, he/she should rest with their head elevated. There might be some swelling and bleeding from the nose. It is advisable to put an ice pack on the nose to reduce the swelling. You should not blow your nose for two weeks after the surgery. It is advisable to eat light meals till you recover. You will fully recover within one to two months.
