There are various medical interventions available for male infertility. They include hormone medication, Assisted Reproductive Technology, etc.

What is Male Infertility

Male infertility is the inability to get a female partner pregnant. When a couple is unable to conceive a child even after regular, unprotected sex for over a year, the chances are they might have infertility issues.

Studies show that there is a 30% decrease in sperm count in Indian men. Low sperm count and motility are the causes of male infertility in India.

Symptoms of Male Infertility

You might have low fertility levels if you show any of the following symptoms. They include:

  • A problem in ejaculation.
  • Decreased sexual desire.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • A lump in the testicles.
  • Reduced hair growth.
  • Growth of breast (gynecomastia).

Causes of Male Infertility

Male infertility can be caused by several medical, environmental, and lifestyle factors. They are:

  • Varicocele - This happens when the veins in your testicles swell, causing reduced blood flow to your testicles.
  • Hormonal imbalances - Studies show that low levels of male hormones, such as testosterone, cause infertility in men.
  • Drugs and alcohol - Drugs and alcohol can cause erectile dysfunction and lower testosterone levels.
  • Radiation - Exposure to radiation for long periods can reduce your sperm count.
  • Problems with ejaculation - When the semen goes back up into your bladder instead of going to the tip of your penis, it is called retrograde ejaculation. It is known to cause problems in fertility levels.

How is Male Infertility Diagnosed?

There are two steps to diagnosing male infertility. They are:

  1. Physical examination and medical history - Your doctor will physically examine your testicles and ask you about your medical history, health conditions, diseases, and sexual habits.
  2. Semen analysis - The doctor asks you to ejaculate your semen into a container, and it is sent for analysis. The analysis would check your sperm count, the shape of your sperm, motility of your sperm, and infections.

Prevention of Male Infertility

Factors such as a family history of male infertility cannot be controlled. However, you can control other factors that may make you less vulnerable to developing male infertility. They are:

  • No smoking.
  • No drinking.
  • No drugs.
  • Avoid radiation or extra heat.
  • Less stress.

Treatment

There are several options to treat male infertility. They include:

  • Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) - In this method, the sperm is obtained through masturbation or a sperm donor. It is used for in vitro fertilization or put in the genital tract of the female.
  • Hormone Medication - Your doctor might recommend medications that would increase your level of testosterone to increase your sperm count.
  • Antibiotics - If an infection is causing infertility, taking antibiotics and curing the infection may help with fertility levels.
  • Varicocelectomy - This is a surgery that involves fixing the swollen veins of your testicles, regulating the blood flow, and improving your sperm count and motility.
