What Is Microdochectomy?
Microdiscectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the breast duct. It is a surgery done for the treatment of persistent nipple discharge from a single duct.

How Is Microdochectomy Performed?
The affected duct is identified through galactography, which is a procedure that investigates the ductal system of the breast and serves as a map of the ducts to help locate the affected one, before the surgery. Furthermore, several examinations, including mammography or breast ultrasound, may be requested by the surgeon.
Gentle pressure is exerted on the nipple to identify the opening of the affected duct. A fine probe is carefully inserted as far as possible into the duct, making sure that it is not damaged or disrupted. The duct is then dilated and the dye is injected into it marking the duct.
The borders of the nipple are traced and then the areolar skin is raised to create a skin flap, then the affected duct is gently dissected and freed off from the tissues and removed. If multiple ducts are involved, then a more extensive procedure, like central duct excision, may be recommended.
