How to Prepare for ACL Reconstruction?

Before going for the ACL reconstruction surgery the doctor will make you undergo physical therapy for at least 2-3 weeks. This physical therapy is done to reduce the pain and swelling in the knee and help you strengthen your muscles. This also helps to recover your range of motion. Surgery is done on the stiff, painful, and swollen knee can be unsuccessful. This can stop you from regaining full-range motion after the surgery.

The operation is performed on an outpatient. Inform your doctor about the type of medications you are taking and discuss the procedure. You will be advised by your doctor not to smoke or drink until full recovery. Follow the diet plan given by your doctor for fast recovery and always inform beforehand about and past medical issues that you had with your doctor.

What is the Procedure of the Surgery?

During the Surgery

You will be either given general or local anaesthesia. In ACL reconstruction, the damaged ligament is removed and replaced by a band of tissues taken from the other knee. This is known as grafting. The graft can come from your other healthy knee or a deceased donor.

The surgeon at Apollo Kondapur will drill tunnels into your shinbone and thigh bone to position the graft properly. The graft is safely attached by the use of screws and other devices.

After the Surgery

After the surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room where you will be monitored until you wake up from the anaesthesia.

Your surgeon will put your knee in a cast to prevent any unnecessary movements which will only delay the recovery process.

The place of the incision must be kept clean and dry for fast healing. Timely taking your prescribed pain medicines and using ice packs to reduce swelling and pain.

Medications can be taken in case of pain and swelling. You will be instructed by your doctor on how to apply ice packs to your knee. You have to walk with the help of a walker or crutches. Daily exercise and physical therapy are needed for fast recovery.

ACL reconstruction is done to treat the damaged ligaments. The process is very safe and has a high rate of success. Generally, ACL reconstruction is done in athletes as they have a higher chance to get injured in such areas.
