Laser Prostatectomy is a surgical procedure that is conducted to treat problems due to an enlarged prostate. There are three types of laser prostatectomy: Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate, Holmium laser ablation of the prostate, and Holmium laser enucleation. 

Laser Prostatectomy has specific risks associated with it, such as urinary tract infection, erectile dysfunction, etc. It takes up to two weeks to recover from the surgery. 

What is Laser Prostatectomy

Laser Prostatectomy, also known as prostate laser surgery, is a medical procedure conducted to remove any urinary problems related to enlarged prostates. This is primarily done for men who have trouble passing urine due to the pressure the prostate puts on the urinary bladder.

A week before your surgery, your doctor will ask you to stop taking medications such as blood thinners and pain medication. Your doctor may prescribe you antibiotics to avoid developing urinary tract infections. 

You are administered general anesthesia before the surgery is conducted. Once you are unconscious, the doctor will insert a thin, fiber-optic tube or scope through the tip of your penis into the urethra. A highly concentrated and precise laser will come out of the scope that will either reduce or cut the extra prostate tissue blocking the urinary bladder. Once the tissue is removed, the doctor will insert a catheter to ease your urine flow. 

After the surgery, you are taken to a recovery room where the nurse will monitor your vital signs and blood pressure. Once the effect of the anesthesia wears off, you can go home. It is usual for bloody urine, burning sensation, and frequent urination to come for a few days at home. It takes 2 to 3 weeks to recover from the surgery. 

Ideal Candidates for Laser Prostatectomy

People who are ideal candidates for laser prostatectomy are:

• Men with Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
• Men suffering from an enlarged prostate
• Kidney damage
• Bladder Stones
• Trouble urinating

Why is Laser Prostatectomy Conducted?

Laser prostatectomy is conducted to remove any growth or extra tissue blocking the urinary bladder. Removing the excess tissue will help regularise the flow and frequency of urine. This procedure is also used to treat conditions such as kidney damage and bladder damage.  

Types of Laser Prostatectomy

There are three types of laser prostatectomy. They are:

• Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate (PVP) -  In this procedure, the laser that comes out of the scope vaporizes and removes the extra prostate tissue and regularizes urine flow. 
• Holmium Laser Ablation of the Prostate - In this procedure, it is the same as PVP. The difference in these procedures is that a different kind of laser is used. 
• Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate - This procedure is conducted on men with a very enlarged prostate. In this procedure, a laser cuts out the excess prostate tissue. Then another instrument is used to cut the tissue into smaller tissues for easy removal.

There are several associated with laser prostatectomy. They are:

• Short hospital stay - Laser prostatectomy is performed in the outpatient department due to a minimally invasive procedure. A patient has to stay overnight and then is released the next day after surgery. 
• Low risk of bleeding -  This procedure is suitable for patients with blood disorders or who take a blood thinner. 
• Immediate results -  After the procedure is done, there is an improvement in the urine flow within a few weeks.

Risks Associated with Laser Prostatectomy

There are a few benefits associated with laser prostatectomy. They are:

• Urinary Tract Infection(UTI) - It is common to get UTI after the surgery. It can happen when the catheter is inserted after the procedure. 
• Erectile Dysfunction -  This occurs very rarely. But it may happen after the surgery. 
• Retreatment - The surgery may have failed to remove some part of the excessive tissue or may have grown back. 
• Narrow Urethra - The surgery may leave scars on the urethra and narrow the structure of the urethra, blocking the urine flow.
