The prostate is a walnut-shaped gland that’s present in the male gender between the penis and the bladder and is responsible for producing seminal fluid, which is necessary to nourish and transport. Some of the other responsibilities of the prostate include helping with urine control and secrete PSA or prostate-specific antigen that keeps the semen in a liquid state. What Causes Prostate Cancer?
We still don’t know the exact reason why prostate cancer occurs. However, when the prostate begins to change its DNA, it tells the abnormal cells to divide and grow more quickly than the normal cells, where it causes the normal cells to die and the abnormal cells live leading to cancer. Some of the risk factors are age, family history of prostate cancer, and obesity.
How is Prostate Cancer Diagnosed?
You can get the screening done for prostate cancer if you are over the age of 50 or experiencing the symptoms. Some of the commonly used screening tests include;
- Digital Rectal Exam: During the digital rectal exam, your doctor will insert a gloved finger, which is fully lubricated, inside the rectum. Since the rectum is close to the prostate, your doctor will be able to identify any abnormalities.
- PSA Test: During this test, a blood sample is drawn from the veins to check for the PSA levels. If high levels of PSA are present, it can be an indication of cancer.
Some other tests that can help detect cancer are ultrasound, MRI scan, and prostate biopsy. During a prostate biopsy, cells are collected from the prostate to check for any abnormal cells.
