Laparoscopy procedure

A laparoscopy procedure is done to check the abdominal organs using a surgical instrument. The surgical instrument used for a laparoscopy procedure is called a laparoscope. It is used to identify the source of pelvic or abdominal pain.

How is the procedure performed?

Laparoscopy is a one-day procedure which means that the patient will be allowed to go home on the same day the procedure is done. At first, general anesthesia is given to the patient to numb the body or in some cases, local anesthesia is given to numb the lower body.

During the laparoscopy procedure, the surgeon will make an incision below the belly button and then a small tube called a cannula will be inserted that is used to inflate the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas. Due to carbon dioxide, the visibility of the organs in the abdomen increases. The surgeon may take a sample of tissues from the organ that is to be diagnosed. Later, the incisions are closed by the stitches or surgical tapes in the belly area.

Before the procedure

Side effects of laparoscopic procedure

Some of the major complications or side effects of laparoscopy procedure are:

• Irritation on the skin
• Nerve damage is possible
• Blood clots may get formed
• Problems while urinating
• Adhesions
• Damage to the bladder or, abdominal blood vessel
• Damage to the uterus or, the pelvic muscles

Right candidate

It is important to look at the eligibility criteria before undergoing the surgery to avoid further complications. Here is a list of factors that are not considered ideal for the laparoscopic procedure

• People with previous abdominal surgery are not considered ideal
• People who have obesity or who are overweight
• People with pelvic infection or a history of pelvic infection
• Malnourished people
• People who have chronic bowel diseases

Recovery after the laparoscopic procedure

After the laparoscopic procedure is performed, the patient will not be allowed to go home until he/she is able to urinate by themselves. The surgery may cause problems in urinating. In most cases, the patient is allowed to go home 3 to 4 hours after the surgery but the doctors at Apollo Spectra, Jaipur may recommend staying for up to 1 day.

After the surgery, the patient may feel scars on the stomach or tenderness in the belly button. Pain may also be felt after the effect of anaesthesia doses off. The carbon dioxide gas which was given during the surgery may also fill up in the chest, stomach, arms, or shoulders and they may ache.

In rare cases, the patient may also feel nauseated for the rest of the day. The doctor may prescribe medications and advise proper rest for a few weeks before the patient is permitted to go home. Healing may take a month or more.
