Can Piles Be Treated Without Surgery?

It is definitely possible to treat piles or haemorrhoids without the need of surgery. However, before you explore alternative options for treatment, you need to understand the condition first. The treatment of the condition depends on the stage it is in.

Initial diagnosis and causes of piles

Before everything else, you need to make sure you have piles in the first place. Due to the nature of the condition, piles are often confused with other conditions like anal fistula and anal fissures. It is imperative to get expert medical opinion on your particular condition.

When you are examined by the doctor, the diagnosis is first confirmed through examination and history. Thereafter, the doctor will try to understand the reason behind piles being developed. Surgery won’t be necessary for all piles.

Most commonly, piles are caused due to a diet with low fibre content as well as insufficient intake of water or fluids. Foods with low fibre content, for example rice, result in straining and hard stools. The anal canal wall can be damaged by straining and can cause the blood vessels to balloon.

Lifestyle changes to treat piles

Factors like body weight and diet can play a role in increasing the risk of piles being developed. The condition can be prevented and even treated by maintaining healthy weight and consuming high fibre foods.

Initially, your doctor is likely to recommend certain lifestyle changes that can help you manage piles.

Body weight: The incidence as well as severity of piles can be reduced by losing weight.

Diet: There is a good chance that piles are occurring because of straining during bowel movements. Too much straining usually results from constipation. Changing your diet can help maintain the regularity and softness of the stools. For that, you need to incorporate a high fibre diet, which includes sufficient vegetables and fruits. In particular, you should try consuming bran-based breakfast cereals. If you have piles, your doctor may also advise you to drink more water. Avoiding caffeine is also recommended.

Apart from these, it is also advisable to avoid straining while passing stool and also exercising. Working out can be therapeutic for a condition like piles.

Home remedies to Treat Piles

Certain home treatments can also help you relieve the mild pain, inflammation and swelling of piles. These include:

  • Eating the right food: Apart from fruits and vegetables, you should also eat whole grains. These foods increase the bulk of stool and soften it. This allows you to avoid straining, which worsen the symptoms of piles that are existing. Incorporate fibre to your diet gradually for avoiding issues with gas.
  • Topical treatments: Haemorrhoid creams or suppositories containing hydrocortisone can be applied. These creams are available over-the-counter. You can even use pads that contain numbing agents or witch hazel.
  • Warm baths: Keep your anal area soaked in plain warm water for about 10-15 minutes. Do this twice per day.
  • Pain relievers: To temporarily relieving the discomfort, you can use Aspirin, Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen.

Treatments like these can help you get rid of piles symptoms within the span of a week. If you still don’t get any relief, you should try visiting your doctor.

Medications

Your doctor might recommend over-the counter medications if your piles (haemorrhoids) only show mild symptoms. Painkillers, creams, pads and ointments can help soothe the swelling and redness around the anal region. These medications do not cure the condition but only help with the symptoms. You should not use them for more than a week. Doing so can result in thinning of the skin.
