June 20, 2017Obesity is a condition where a person has body fat to such an extent that it tends to hinder their daily lives. It could also trigger health problems. A person is considered obese when his/her Body Mass Index (BMI) is over 30. Some common causes of obesity include excessive intake of food, lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyles and hereditary.
Obesity can be divided into two categories, based on causes and on the basis of fat deposition:
Based on causes or other relative diseases
1. Type 1- Obesity
Excessive intake of calories, not sleeping enough, leading a sedentary lifestyle etc; are the causes of this type of obesity. This is a very common type of obesity. It can be cured by with regular exercises and diet.
2. Type 2- Obesity
This type is caused by diseases like Thyroid, Polycystic Ovarian Disease etc. There is abnormal weight gain despite monitoring health and lifestyle habits in this condition. Commonly, hypothyroidism causes obesity as one’s weight gain continuously increases until monitored with medication.
Based on the fat deposition
- Peripheral
If there is excessive fat in the hips and thighs, it is peripheral obesity. - Central
In this type, the abdominal area has the most amount of fat in the whole body. This type is considered the most dangerous as excess fat is closely located to important organs of the body. - Combination
It is a combination of both peripheral and central.
Some types of obesity can be reduced over time if a person eats healthy along with a tough workout routine. However, presently most of the obese people are opting for a weight loss surgery these days. The surgeries are performed with minimally invasive techniques.
